I recently visited Wilmot Gardens located on the University of Florida campus. Wilmot Botanical Gardens is free and open to the public year-round. It is located near Shands hospital. Patients, care-givers and family members are encouraged to visit the gardens as a place of respite while receiving care from any of the surrounding UF Health facilities. History buffs might enjoy visiting the gardens' historical marker and learning about the gardens' place in American horticulture history, and lovers of nature and/or gardening will enjoy the extensive plant life, including over 250 varieties of camellias.
The sign I have provided below describes the history of the garden in more detail. The Wilmot Memorial Gardens was dedicated on January 18, 1954 to honor Royal James Wilmot, a UF horticulturist and reword camellia expert. During his time at UF, Wilmot developed one of the worlds largest research collections of camellias, which served as a site for the classification and propagation of virtually every known camellia species as well as hundreds of varieties. Following Wilmot's death in 1950, the university received more than 300 camellia varieties from every region of the United States as a tribute to his many achievements. Those camellias became the centerpiece of Wilmot Garden, a place that continues to radiate life, growth and peace, and reflects nature at its best.
I found my visit to be extremely peaceful. There were butterflies everywhere buzzing from one flower to another. There are several paved paths to walk on throughout the garden, allowing visitors to see every part. I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking to explore more gardens in Gainesville.
